Character description
The beggar looked up from his half-empty bottle and tried to see the face of his questioner.
“Sebastien, my Lord?
Oh, he is the finest boy, my lord, the finest! The police got it all wrong; my boy would never do something like that! Are you a police officer, Sir? If you’re looking for Sebastien, I heard about his escape, but I haven’t seen him since he was arrested! And let me tell you, Sir, it was very unfair…”
A tingling of coins made the man look at his questioner differently.
“Oh! I see! But you know the police, they never get anything right! And… when it’s something about us, they don’t give themselves too much trouble! We’re the scum of the society, Sebastien and me, are we not, good Sir?”
Another coin was placed in the beggar’s hand.
“Sebastien’s probably the brightest boy around these parts. And believe me I’m not making him sound interesting to your ears. There are a couple of smart kids on the streets; no one survives being stupid around here. But Sebastien’s different, not only smarter, but also nobler. He has a posture that makes him different from everyone else.
I don’t quite remember when he started appearing on these parts, but I always saw him followed by other kids. He took care of everyone who was lost or alone. The police called it “his gang”, when they arrested him, but it was more like his family. He took the blame for one of us and allowed himself be thrown in jail! I always told that boy that there are no heroes among thieves, but he never listened!
I often wonder who his parents are! He was probably abandon or something. I’m sure his parents weren’t from the streets! You can see that on Sebastien’s face! He has not a single trace of rudeness; except from those defiant eyes, of course, but I’m sure he wasn’t born with those! Yeah, I’m sure he was born into a good family; but why he was abandoned, I don’t know. But those high society people are the worse, one never knows if the boy’s birth was inconvenient. Oh, I mean… some high society people, Sir. Some!”
While counting the money, the old beggar continued…
“But I have no idea how he escaped from that place! The prison, I mean! But Sebastien was always very good on planning things and acting on the right moment. He could even beat me on a chess game by the time he was fifteen! And believe me, that is saying something! He had never the same luck with his friends, though, they left him go to prison on his own, even though he was protecting them. But I guess he felt it was his duty, as he used to say, since he considered himself our leader! Good boy, Sebastien! Very good boy, indeed!
Why are you interested on him, Sir? Sir?”
