The phone call was frantic, tears intermingled with words, almost like a cheap B movie played ad infinitum against the dark moonless sky. The cigarette was burning my fingers. I crushed it against the ashtray and asked her to calm down.
Of course I would come over. Don't worry about a thing, honey. I'm on my way.
The bastard. They're all bastards, come to think of it. I harbour no illusions; I'm sure someone thinks of me as bastard as well. But this particular bastard took her all the way to the moon and back, and then left her in hell after promising the world.
The particular flavor of the hell she spoke about I would soon find out. Oh Kalya, sweet Kalya, you knew so very well I had a soft spot for you. And I never suspected, I never questioned, even as you layed your head on my shoulder and pretended to cry. Even as your newborn fangs found a taste of my blood, I never asked and and I never let go.
I woke up in my bed the next evening, sore and broken and hungry. I crawled to the bathroom only to find a single word scrawled in red on the mirror. "Sorry." That's all she said for dragging me into darkness, for turning me into a predator, a hunter of men, forever denied the warmth of sunlight and the forgotten joys of mankind. I hunt. I kill. Detached from man's race against time, I contemplate the meaning of life and death, as time and again they struggle and fall, sacrifice to my everlasting hunger.
I guess it is immortality of a sort.
