Story:

"Life was good until that one night... and then it was great."

You watch the girl in the gothic outfit and Egyptian makeup as she wraps her legs around the monkey-bars in the park. As she slowly hangs upside down her short hair brushes the sand below her. From her nearby black and tattered pickup truck you can hear a Billy Idol song about half way done playing softly on the radio. After a few seconds she goes on.

“I can’t turn into a bat or control people’s thoughts or anything, but this life is great. It’s not what you may think. I’m not a killer, though most of my kind is. I’m a fighter. I fight werewolves. But sometimes I wish I didn’t have to do that either.” Swinging slightly, she looks over at you with her gleaming silver eyes. “You want to know how it happened?” You nod and she smiles. “In that case you better make yourself comfortable.”

As you sit down she seems to compose her thoughts. “Well, first off I guess I should tell you my name: I’m Zoë. Z-O-E with a double dot. It started in high school when I spent a lot of time with my friends… when we didn’t know we were all doomed. We’d do everything together. Go see movies, go to amusement parks, or go shopping even if none of us had any money. I was the oldest of the group by a few months, so I got my driver’s license first. When I was able to drive my friends around we started going everywhere whenever. Especially when school was out. A lot of the time we were out till one or two in the morning. Every now and then the group would split up and we’d meet back up later. But on with the story.”

“Kitty was the first to go. One night when we weren’t all together I was at home reading when she called on a payphone. She wanted me to pick her up and she sounded really worried, so I left right away. When I found her she looked sick and frightened, so I got her into my truck and started to bring her home. On the way I asked her what had happened. Had she been mugged? Threatened? Raped? She wouldn’t tell and as time went by she got worse and worse, so I decided to bring her into the hospital. When I told her she didn’t like the idea one bit. She said that I couldn’t. That they wouldn’t understand. ‘I won’t understand unless you tell me,’ I said, hoping to get something out of her. It only worried her more and she still wouldn’t talk, so I continued to drive to the hospital. When she realized I wasn’t taking her home she panicked and grabbed the steering wheel, sending us right into a ditch and flipping the truck. I managed to get out, but when I tried to help her she kept fighting back. Eventually I grabbed her and pulled her out, but she clawed at me with her long nails. It hurt, but I knew that I had to help her. Something was terribly wrong with her both mentally and physically.

“When I finally got us up to the side of the road she wriggled around and eventually bit my arm. I was shocked at first, but soon I pried her off me. I was bleeding, but it wasn’t too bad. Or so I thought. I managed to get her calm enough to just sit on the side of the road as I flagged down a car. They took us to the hospital. I had my arm wrapped up and was able to go home, but Kitty had to stay. They put her in intensive care, but didn’t know what was wrong. They said I couldn’t do anything and that I should get some rest. So I got my mom to pick me up and by the time she got me back home I was feeling a little sick. I went to bed like the doctor had suggested and didn’t wake up until three the next day feeling very ill. As the week went on I got worse and worse. About three days after the accident Kitty was let out of the hospital due to a ‘miraculous recovery’ and when I saw her she looked fine. But she seemed really sad. She kept saying that she was sorry about what she had done to me. I didn’t understand and she didn’t elaborate. I asked her, ‘Kitty, what are you sorry for?’ and all she said was, ‘I’m not Kitty any more. I’m the Angle of Plot Twists.’ Now that didn’t make any sense to me. She was a writer and had used that as a screen name many times before. AOPT. It made no sense for her to say it now. It made me wonder if she was mad. But I would never know. I never saw her again.”

Zoë continues to swing back and forth slowly and draws little circles in the white moonlit sand with her finger, apparently thinking. The song on the radio changes to one by Pink Floyd.

“I was the next, obviously. But being a vampire didn’t make me react the way she had. I liked it, even without having someone to guide me. A vampire much older than I offered for me to join his clan and I did. But I’m shy and didn’t talk to the other members. Soon I bit one of my other friends, Paige. But now that she’s a vampire she likes to be called Dark Princess. If you want to hear about that go ahead and talk to her. I think she likes telling the story. As far as my other friends go, I bit them all, one by one, but most of them were able to heal and went on as humans. Another one of my friends, Heather, did become one, however. Unfortunately we were separated and she somehow wound up in another world. But that’s a little tricky to explain.

“Eventually I left my first clan and joined another called Angels in Hell. They’ve been a big help to me. I like them. They’re friendly. But I’m still shy and don’t really like talking to people I don’t really know. I’ve kept in touch with my human friends and it’s been nice. I go out and fight werewolves every now an then. Buy weapons and armor. The whole nine yards. But this is kind of where the story gets boring.”

And without another word she flips herself right side up again and hops down into the sand. She smiles at you and walks back to her truck where she leaves you sitting in the warm sand next to the swing-set thinking about what you have just heard.
