Carlo Gambino (1902 - 1976)
A.K.A:"Defacto Boss of Bosses, The Godfather"
On the outside he was a gentle, non-opposing figure, staying close to his neighborhood and buying fruit at the local carts. On the inside he was a survivor, and a cunning businessman who believed in the old way of doing things. He was a bundle of contradictions and most of the detectives that were assigned to follow him often said it was difficult to read what was going on inside his head. This was Carlo Gambino, probably the most powerful Mafia don this country has ever known.
Gambino arrived in this country aboard the S.S. Vincenzo in 1921 and joined the mob as a soldier for Joe "The Boss" Masseria. After Masseria was killed off, Gambino quickly shifted to Salvatore Maranzano and then to the "Young Turks" after the Castellemmarese Wars. With the designation of power under the new Commission, Gambino, along with his brothers-in-law, Peter and Paul Castellano, became soldiers under Vincent Mangano. This lasted until 1951 when Mangano (along with this brother) were killed (Vincent actually disappeared, it is only logical that he was murdered, although there was no body found). Albert Anastasia became boss and appointed Gambino boss, which everyone thought to be a joke. Gambino, even at the time was considered weak, taking ridicule from Anastasia that no other Mafioso would have done. At the time, no one considered him a threat, which made it very easy for Gambino to maneuver. In 1957, Vito Genovese approached Gambino about doing away with Anastasia, making room for Gambino to take over the top spot. The ambitious Gambino did it, but knew he wasn't safe to stop there. Genovese wanted to rule all the families and figured to take control by placing younger, weaker individuals in the top spots in all the families. Gambino recognized Genovese's plans and knew it was up to him to help put a stop to it or Genovese would become all-powerful and more ruthless than he already was.
Gambino made peace with Frank Costello and Charlie Luciano and sought their support to take down Genovese, which they had wanted to do for years. Costello and Luciano considered Genovese to be greedy and untrustworthy and just plain disliked him anyway and were happy to hear that Gambino thought the same. Together with Meyer Lansky, whom Gambino would later work with in building the strength of the syndicate with legitimate business ventures, the four cooked up a narcotics scheme to do away with Genovese. Even though the rules in the Mafia clearly state that no one should deal in drugs, Genovese couldn't resist the easy money and wanted in on the deal. As soon as Genovese was totally committed to the deal, the foursome tipped off the police. Genovese was arrested and sentenced to prison for 15 years.
Although Gambino did not like Genovese or his tactics there was one idea he took away from the whole ordeal: putting heads of families in charge that were indirectly loyal to him. He would achieve this quite successfully with the death of Thomas Lucchese and Joseph Profaci (Carmine Trumanti and Joseph Colombo). As the years wore on, Gambino gained power in the waterfront unions (inherited after Anastasia was killed) and in the garment district. He never took part in the narcotics or drug dealing, feeling that it would only invite extra, unwanted attention from the Federal Government. This was true, but other dons did not care. Instead Gambino would be hire himself out as a consultant to major businesses, helping them organize and with strategic planning.
Even though the FBI and CIA were both after him, Gambino successfully avoided them, not by hiding out but rather by his health. Ever time they tried to deport him or put him on trial, he would suffer a heart attack or end up in the hospital for some reason. It was a brilliant plan. Along with his soft exterior and his failing health, he bought off the system. In later years, with his power at an all time high, he avoided assassinations as well, but he never lost sight of how he believed things should be run. During the early 1970s, Joseph Colombo, who'd been given the helm of the old Profaci family, began the Italian American Civil Rights League, which brought national attention to the mob and its associates. Gambino, after one year of its existence, confronted Colombo and requested that he stop the rallies due to the media attention it was bringing. But the big headed Colombo refused, theoretically spitting in the face of Gambino. This angered the old school Don. Afterwards, Gambino would approach the Gallo brothers (Joe and Larry) to dispose of Colombo. Gambino required that the hit be done at the nationally covered rally for a couple of reasons: 1) to get rid of Colombo so that everyone could see what happens when you crossed Gambino and 2) to rub Colombo's nose in what he was trying to stop, the association of violence and the Italian-American heritage.
All would not be well for Gambino near the end. He would cause conflict amongst his soldiers and underboss with the appointment of Paul Castellano as new head of the family after his passing. Although Gambino had risen through the ranks, it was believed that Castellano was a greedy, coattail rider that had reached the top position only because he was Gambino's brother-in-law. By putting Castellano in place, Gambino was making the statement that he wanted the family to move away from the streets and move more into legitimate business (Castellano walked around more like a banker than a mobster). This was Gambino's idea and his decision to not install Aniello Dellacroce as the new boss (who was skipped over when Anastasia was killed). Gambino ousted him then and had done it again in his passing. This conflict would continue for years after his passing and would come to an end in 1985 when Castellano was killed by another young Turk named John Gotti a disciple of Dellacroce and as brazen and loud a mobster the syndicate had seen since Albert Anastasia himself.
