Brumhilda doesn't know she is a vampire. As a human, the girl suffered from schizophrenic attacks, leading her to believe that the people around her are naught but dogs (and big dogs) who are out to harm her. After becoming a vampire, she merely assumed that by drinking blood, she swallows protection to her body and soul.
